Out of all the electrical appliances we have in the home, the dishwasher is one we tend to appreciate the most. It drastically cuts down the time spent washing and drying dishes, which can be a lifesaver when you have a large family. The worst thing that can happen is having it decide to stop working when you need it the most. Many people don’t think their dishwasher needs cleaning, which can lead to breakdowns. Give your dishwasher a regular clean

You may think your dishwasher cleans itself with every wash, but that isn’t the case at all. It is easy for food residue and mineral deposits to build-up. A good clean should be done every six months or sooner if you recognise a need for it. Before attempting to clean, you should consult the owner’s manual to see the manufacturer’s advice on how to clean the dishwasher. Normally, unless otherwise advised against it, you can use a dishwasher cleaning product and run a cycle with it as per the instructions. Alternatively, use a cup of white vinegar and run a cycle. This will help remove soap scum. Use dishwashing liquid to wipe the door (interior and exterior) and seals, checking that they are still in good condition as you do.

Clean the filter

Remove the filter from the base and simply wash it under running water. Use dishwashing liquid and give it a good rinse before putting back. How often you need to do this really depends on how frequent the dishwasher is used and whether or not the dishes are rinsed before being put in. We recommend starting weekly and increasing or decreasing your frequency as needed.

 

Check spray holes for blockages

The spray holes are essential for even getting water onto the dishes. If they are clogged, then you won’t get a great clean and can potentially cause damage to your dishwasher. Remove the racks and unscrew the tower or spinning arms. Inspect the holes where the water comes out, and if needed, remove debris with a toothpick or soft toothbrush and white vinegar.

Regularly replace hoses

Do not wait until there is a problem before replacing your hoses. This should be done every two years if you have a standard rubber inlet hose. Consider changing it to a braided stainless steel one instead.

Inspect the racks

Do a quick visual inspection of the racks themselves. Make sure there is no chipped paint or exposed metal surfaces that can become rusty otherwise you risk your dishes becoming damaged. Special touch up paint can be used, or replacement racks can be ordered.
