Have we found Brisbane's Worst Kitchen?

Home » Blog

We are on the hunt to find Brisbane’s Worst Kitchen!

Although we have found our five finalists we need your help to select our Two People’s Choice winners from the five. Within the next few blog posts we will be finding out a little more about these kitchen horror stories to help you choose which is most deserving of the title as ‘Brisbane’s Worst Kitchen’!

Introducing – Joan of Bulimba

Proudly located in the leafy suburb of Bulimba, this large family home has been lovingly tended to by Joan for over 10 years. Having extended the kitchen and deck area in the last few years, she has plans to complete the top story of the home in 2012 so that finally her entertainers kitchen will be one she can proudly share.

Whilst residing in the property, Joan has been adding charm and also updating as she can afford it. As we all know, renovations don’t come cheap and on a single income, she patiently chips away at the master plan bit by bit.

Joan’s visions for her home are..

– To replace the antique stove.. the oven doesn’t work and she can only use one of the cooktops burners.

– To add a much needed rangehood

– Increase her bench space and depth by re-arranging the space

– Have a proper built in pantry instead of the vintage cupboard in use

– Paint the walls

– Complete the flooring

– Extend the storage space

– Replace all the cupboards as they don’t close properly and need a makeover

– Update all of her appliances

If you think Joan has Brisbane’s Worst Kitchen…. CLICK HERE to LIKE her images and you can also go in the draw to take home either an Ilve Freestanding Microwave valued at $599.00 or a Saeco Lavazza ‘A Moda Mio’ Espresso machine worth $379.00.

Could this be Brisbane's Worst Kitchen?

We are on the hunt to find Brisbane’s Worst Kitchen!

Although we have found our five finalists we need your help to select our Two People’s Choice winners from the five. Within the next few blog posts we will be finding out a little more about these kitchen horror stories to help you choose which is most deserving of the title as ‘Brisbane’s Worst Kitchen’!

Introducing – Katherine of Ashgrove

A first home owner, Katherine and her brother are guns blazing with their renovation plan to be completed ASAP! Since their purchase in July 2011 the owners have taken down walls, removed countless layers of wallpaper, painstakingly scrapped off hundreds of tiny foam tiles from the ceiling and are beginning to build underneath. This house certainly has potential but in it’s present condition is un-liveable.. partly due to the house being raised and it swaying in the wind whilst the remainder of the bracings are fixed.

Once the house is raised and built in, it will almost double the homes size adding another two bedrooms and a large alfresco deck with bi-fold doors, perfect for entertaining on cool summer nights. But there is certainly a long list of things to do before anyone is relaxing at this home! It doesn’t take a seasoned renovator to see that this place needs a lot of TLC before it will have that desired WOW factor.. and these rookie home owners certainly have the determination to pull it off!

Katherine’s least favourite elements of this space are.. – The lovely lino tiles that are not permanently fixed and often move about underfoot.

– No bench space..at all

– No pantry, currently they are using a flat pack garage shelving unit for storage

– It’s overall lack of functionality and ease of use

– There was so much wallpaper stuck to the walls, and tacked on with chipboard panels.. that removing them all has left hundreds of tiny nails over every wall in the house.

– Foam tiles on the ceiling have been removed only to leave a pattern of glue dots that have to be scrapped off by hand.. one by one

– Wallpaper everywhere

and

– Who could ignore the light switch hanging from the ceiling in the middle of the kitchen!

If you think Katherine has Brisbane’s Worst Kitchen…. CLICK HERE to LIKE her images and you can also go in the draw to take home either an Ilve Freestanding Microwave valued at $599.00 or a Saeco Lavazza ‘A Moda Mio’ Espresso machine worth $379.00.

Perhaps THIS is Brisbane's Worst Kitchen!

Introducing – Conor of Mitchelton

Conor and her husband are the people that get stuff done. They wanted to buy a house.. so they did! In fact it was the first one they looked at and BAM – they are renovating. We aren’t talking a few coats of paint or a change in decor. When these two talk renovations, they mean ripping up inches of concrete flooring, knocking down entire walls and remodelling an entire space to create the open plan dream that they both envisage. All this in a mere two months since they first unlocked the door to their future family home.

To create their dream home, Conor definitely prepared to put all her efforts into this place with youth and alot of tradesmen friends on their side, they have an arduous but rewarding task at hand.

She has big plans for their home and no doubt will make her creative mark on the place. An open plan, modern island bench top with a feature bulkhead and unique lighting design is all in order for this Mitchelton abode. Which means the existing awkward design with its pokey floor plan, old appliances and impractical storage space is on the way out!

Conor’s least favourite elements of this space are – It’s pokey and awkward to work in, especially before the wall was taken down as the kitchen was tucked into a tiny room in the back of the house.

– Next to no bench space – Her pantry is in the room next door! Scullery / Office isn’t really a long term solution.

– The oven is working, but not very well

– The windows are a strange height which limits design options

– The sink is unusually long which eats into the usable bench space next to oven and cooktop

If you think Conor has Brisbane’s Worst Kitchen…. CLICK HERE to LIKE her images and you can also go in the draw to take home either an Ilve Freestanding Microwave valued at $599.00 or a Saeco Lavazza ‘A Moda Mio’ Espresso machine worth $379.00.

Maybe this is Brisbane's Worst Kitchen?

We are on the hunt to find Brisbane’s Worst Kitchen!

Although we have found our five finalists we need your help to select our People’s Choice winners from the five. Within the next few blog posts we will be finding out a little more about these kitchen horror stories to help you choose which is most deserving of the title as ‘Brisbane’s Worst Kitchen’!

Introducing – Karen of Woodridge

Karen is the proud owner of this lovely townhouse. Nestled within a larger complex it has served her well over the years. She has purchased and looked after the property on her wage alone and is looking for all the help she can get to ensure the security of her nest egg for both her and her family’s future.

Having a close family has certainly helped over the years as her two sons have assisted Karen to update the house bit by bit. A new deck and patio roof have been installed, along with the floors and a few splashes of paint. But the heart of the home has seen better days.

Since buying the property in 2003, Karen has seen to it that the house has been well looked after, unfortunately love can only go so far and the kitchen is starting to show the effects of countless family meals being prepared in a rather small space. It would be a dream come true if Karen was able to breathe some new light into the kitchen and allow the home to come into its full potential.

Some of Karen’s wishes for the space include;
-To make the space more user friendly and durable

– Replace the cabinets and draws that are missing and falling apart with age

– Replace the stove and have a proper range hood installed, as you can imagine in a small property such as this, any fumes engulf the whole house very quickly without proper air extraction.

– Update the look of the kitchen

– Have a pantry within the kitchen

– Co-ordinate the adjacent cupboards and laundry (nestled opposite the dining table) to create a better flowing more usable family space

If you think Karen has Brisbane’s Worst Kitchen…. CLICK HERE to LIKE her images and you can also go in the draw to take home either an Ilve Freestanding Microwave valued at $599.00 or a Saeco Lavazza ‘A Moda Mio’ Espresso machine worth $379.00.

Is this Brisbane's Worst Kitchen?

Home » Blog

We are on the hunt to find Brisbane’s Worst Kitchen! After a lot of searching and a fantastic response from our lovely clients.. we have found our five finalists. Within the next few blog posts we will be finding out a little more about these kitchen horror stories to help you choose which is most deserving of the title as ‘Brisbane’s Worst Kitchen’!

Introducing – Candice of Everton Park

Candice is the proud owner of this cute little townhouse in Everton Park. A first home buyer and relatively new to the area she has big plans for the humble space that encapsulates vintage charm.

Although a fan of all things second hand.. Candice finds herself wondering if ‘vintage’ is a word that should belong in a sentence when describing ones kitchen. It would seem that when you are too scared to leave your toaster plugged in for fear of starting an electrical fire.. it might be time to update.

Since buying the property in August of 2011 Candice has already replaced the floors and carpets and is excited to be adding her own touches to the house. Unfortunately though.. it was due to some very ill placed hot water piping – that runs along the skirting through most of the kitchen and living space – the timber floors she dreamed of were unable to be fitted. Instead a vinyl flooring had to be chosen, much to her disappointment.

Highlights of this space include.. but are certainly not limited to;
-Unusable cabinets, some don’t open at all due to sagging bench tops, some open but don’t close properly.
-Draws that were shortened to make room for aforementioned hot water pipes and now fall out of their runners when opened
-Energy guzzling fridge that also doesn’t run well due to the heat of the stove right next to it. – The unusual placement of appliances
-Chipboard cupboards flaking and falling apart
-Very little and very narrow bench space
-Overall lack of functional space
-No range hood
-Ugly pipes intruding on the kitchen
-Wallpaper that is in disrepair
-Two power points for the entire kitchen
-The fridge that has seen better days.. and although it does it’s best, often doesn’t actually keep the food very cold.

If you think Candice has Brisbane’s Worst Kitchen…. CLICK HERE to LIKE her images and you can also go in the draw to take home either an Ilve Freestanding Microwave valued at $599.00 or a Saeco Lavazza ‘A Moda Mio’ Espresso machine worth $379.00.

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!

Home » Blog

With Australia Day just around the corner the Australian version of the very stylish Italian FAB28 would make a bold – and very patriotic – statement in anyone’s home.

The iconic, retro Smeg refrigerator has been adorned with Australia’s very own national flag – the entire appliance is a beautiful deep cobalt blue with the Southern Cross sitting proudly beneath the Union Jack. You can even go all out patriotic and get the Union Jack design accross the entire door!

And while visually its iconic retro design and bold colouring will take pride of place in anyone’s home – from the home bar and pool room to the kitchen or even the office – the appliance’s technology is very much 21st century!

The FAB28 contains three adjustable quick-chill crystal shelves; automatic defrost; chrome five-bottle wine rack; frozen food storage and a full-width salad and vegetable crisper.

The FAB28 Aussie Special Edition – as with every one of the 16 colour FAB28s – carries an impressive two star energy rating (281KWh/annum)

The Christmas Renovation Project

Home » Blog

Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without some DIY projects to occupy your ‘holiday’ leave from work. What better time of year to gather friends, family and that guy from accounting who knows a friend with a truck to get stuck into the projects you have put off all year.

Nothing is safe from updating by the DIY’er … not even the humble tradition of gingerbread houses.

Chocolate buttons and candy cane lined garden paths are so parse. In 2011 its all about the architecturally designed dream homes of the ginger world in an effort to update your gingerbread home to co-ordinate with your own.

100% sugar based construction.. with no doubt a lot of patience and design savvy.

Now this is a house project anyone could take on. It looks adorable and delicious and you can find the tutorial right
HERE.

Whoever said not to play with your food?

Home » Blog

I am certain at some point in your life your parents have passed down the age old wisdom of ‘don’t play with your food’. Whoever decided this was the golden rule of dinner time clearly hadn’t discovered the joy of the rice cube!

Although I had seen this little rubix cube like contraption before it was only when I saw it in action at the recent Brisbane Good Food & Wine Show that I fell in love with its potential.

I admit I was a tab dubious of how ‘easy’ its creator and demonstrator Ross Patten made the cube look. But with a batch of freshly cooked rice in hand, I began my first attempt at rice tetrus, instructions at the ready.

To my surprise, the rice cube IS as easy as it looks, just a few small movements and voila! Square rice. A small sticky rice mess later, I discovered that if you keep the cube wet it is easier to remove the sticky cube.. also by adding less mixture it allows you to make layered items at once.

At the request of the small person in the house. We made tuna rolls, (Master 5 didn’t quite grasp the cube concept just yet) so tuna rolls it is!

INGREDIENTS
Snack size can of tuna
Mayonnaise to taste
1 cup cooked Jasmine Rice

So easy.. really!

Simply cook the rice, I cheated and boiled it as I had just finished boiling some potatoes and the pot was already in use (anything to save washing up two pots later). You can stick to the Absorption method or use a rice cooker.. but as I found – straining off the water works just as well.

In a separate bowl, mix the tuna and a tablespoon at a time of mayonnaise until the mixture is moist and tacky. The mayonnaise holds all the tuna together so it doesn’t crumble, up to you how liberal you are. If you are feeling really authentic, you can even add a dash of wasabi to the mix.

If you place a cutting mat or bake paper underneath your work space, it makes the clean up a whole lot easier as you will have some small spillages from the cube squishing process.

Following the rice cube instructions, make a half sized cube of just rice. This is the base of the sushi so don’t fill the cube up completely.

Once the base is squished into shape, push the rice to the back of the rice cube to make room for the tune.

Add a small amount of tuna to completely fill the cube, again following the rice cubes instructions to form the shape.

Remove from the cube and VOILA! Easy, Peasy sushi cubes in seconds. No mats! No fuss!

NEXT I want to try alternatives to rice products in the cube. I’m thinking steamed potato cubes, then lightly frying them – Potato gems, eat your heart out!

To purchase your very own cube plus more excellent recipes, ideas an instructions, head to ricecube.com.au

Good Food & Wine Show - We wined... We dined!

Home » Blog

The circus has arrived.. and leading todays extravaganza was none other than the former clown himself, Manu Feidel.

Some fun and frivolity kicked off the day with TV chef and Brisbane local Alistair Macleod warming up the crowd and sharing a plethora of freebies. We weren’t waiting long before Manu made his big screen appearance a fairly risqué opening video, including four French maids. But nonetheless.. we were here to see the man cook and he did not disappoint. A fabulous menu, some juggling and even a few stolen kisses. But Manu brought the house down with his candid humour and French flair.

The Good Food & Wine Show 2011 was definitely worth the wait.. it has graced the shores of Melbourne, Sydney and Perth before FINALLY making it to us here in Brisbane. Ample wine tastings and an excellent array of local produce will ensure this year’s event is as spectacular as always. We sampled everything from biscuits, deserts, cordials, cocktails, burgers, German sausage, peanut brittle, sauces galore and much much more!

Cocktail classes kept the crowds coming in.. the free tastings afterwards may have enticed a few!

The most incredible little rubix cube like invention tickled my fancy! It can make just about anything that into a cube. I am in love! Normally an avid supporter of the ‘less is more’ philosophy in my kitchen cupboards.. I couldn’t resist snapping up this cute little rubix cube like device. Although marketed more for the sushi lovers, this little cutie can also be used to make flat bases for H’orderves, biscuit bases, brownies.. you name it! The rice cube is an Australian invention.. check out how easy and fun it is HERE

If you pop in store over the coming weeks don’t be surprised when your cookies and brownies are square. I promise the coffee will still be in a round vessel though!

Also a BIG feature of this years show was the Gluten Free section. A massive array of produce, ingredients and cookbooks as well as a live cooking demonstration stage exclusively for the GF crowds. We fell in love with Rowie’s Cakes and honestly if I didn’t already know it was Dairy and Gluten free.. I never would have known! Definitely no cardboard in this kitchen!

Long and the short of it – If you are in and around Brisbane this weekend – pop into the Good Food and Wine Show at the Convention Centre.. and bring your appetite!

5 Tips to Make Your House Appear Cleaner Than It Is

Home » Blog

So you get a text message that tells you company is dropping by and they’re only 10 minutes away. Don’t panic. Take a deep breath, now panic and check out these 5 tips for making your house appear clean in a flash. That’s right, I said appear. Who has time to really clean in 10 blocks?

1. Clean the Three T’s: Toilets, Tabletops, the Television. What? The television? Yup! Most living rooms are centered around your tv and the amount of dust that hangs on it, your dvd box set pile that’s off to one side could be tell tale signs of why the rest of your house isn’t exactly spotless. Plus if you sit chatting in the living room, you’ll be staring at it wishing you would have moved it. Toilets and tabletops are a bit more self explanatory, but important none the less.

2. Stash with Efficiency: When company drops in we’ve all been in a situation once or twice where things get tossed in a basket and shoved in the spare bedroom or closet. It’s a quick solution, but it can be done with more efficiency so you can find your stuff later on. Add things to your basket according to the room they go in. That way when company leaves, you can remove the items easily without making 100 trips across your house or apartment to put things where they belong.

3. Pet Hair: Even if you have a sparkling clean house, if your sofa is covered with a layer of dog or cat fur, it suddenly looks less tidy. Keep a rubber glove or your favorite pet hair busting product on hand to knock it all down in a few sweeps.

4. Dishes Be Gone in Seconds Flat: Please don’t judge me for this tip. Admitting that I’ve done it more than once is punishment enough alright? So here goes. Put your dishes in your oven. Wait, what? If you pile your dishes in the sink then it looks like you threw them all in there at the last minute as everyone knows you can’t really wash dishes in that manner and you’ll still look like a slight slob, even though you have clean counters. Instead, grab a baking sheet and stack like items together and slide them in the oven. They’ll slide right back out, be prestacked and ready to be washed so you can recover from the guilt you just gave yourself for following through with this tip. Side note: don’t preheat your oven… even by accident… until they’re removed.

5. Spend 5 Furious Minutes on Your House Everyday: Isn’t that cheating? We’re talking about last minute company here, not preparing all week long for them to come! True, but think about how much you can clean in those few minutes before they arrive. 10 blocks isn’t much. With traffic and parking and walking up your stairs, 5 minutes is a safe estimate. Bring that panic to your life every day and clean with the same intensity for just 5 minutes and your house will always look better for it. Plus, you still have time to watch Greys Anatomy without telling yourself you’ll pick up on commercials.

Now put your feet up and enjoy your company! Afterall… it’s only a matter of time before they leave and you will have to return to washing the dishes that are currently hiding in the oven!

Lighten Up!

Home » Blog

Layout, cabinetry, appliances and handles are always top priority when designing your new or newly renovated kitchen. But how much time have you spent considering the lighting within your new space?

We have pulled together a collection of lighting options beyond the halogen downlight. Don’t be disheartened, downlights have their place – but in a kitchen of distinct style you really need some feature lighting to lighten up your space.

Even in a small space, you can create a room that is truly spectacular. Afterall.. this isn’t just the room that the oven lives in. The kitchen is always the hub of the home, it is where we create, cook and socialise and if you are lucky enough to own a breakfast bar, it is no doubt where the paper gets read too! Why not make it a room with some personality as well?

Pendant lights can be stunning on their own but nestled together in well-designed formations they can turn a space from bland to GRAND!

The ultimate kitchen makeover injection of ‘WOW‘… the Elica STAR rangehood.
Whether your kitchen cries for a chandelier or a disco ball, this new remote controlled extractor hood combines ventilation with light and style. Create a kitchen that is no longer a room to labour in, but one of luxury and refinement.
